My goal for this school year is to create a positive school expereince for our children in which they can find growth and success. I also want to ensure that they are prepared for the rigor of 6th grade and the junior high. This means that I have high expectations and hold them accountable.
However, please don't forget I am always here to help. All of our students have morning study hall passes and are welcome to come to Mrs. Ogaard's, Mrs. Rose's, or my room at 7:40 to ask questions and get additional help. I also allow the students to come in for working lunch to give them additional work time while I am grading and planning.
Nightly Reading Homework
At the beginning of the year, our students brought home green reading homework. The purpose was to get the students apply the strategies they are learning to their independent reading. Now we have evolved to the reading journal! This allows for more freedom of response from the student which allows a truly authentic response. Your student should still be reading for 20-30 minutes per night and responding to what they are reading. Our goal is to read 40 5th grade books by the end of the year which means we should be hitting our 20 book mark by December! Some of our students have been more successful than others. Please remember, the most important part is is allowing students to choose book they love! ❤️
What's coming up?
Next week we will be taking the Direct Writing Assessment along with many other districts in Southern Idaho. The purpose is to allow student to practice writing using the standardized test format. Then about eighty teachers from all over the Treasure Valley will get together and evaluate them together. It is awesome because we get to highlight our student's strengths and get great ideas for other teachers to address any weaknesses.
We will be starting our unit on Biomes shortly which will cumulate in the annual Biome Fair. Your student will choose a unique biome, research it, write an expository text, and create a diorama. The diorama will be displayed at our Biome Fair. We will send out more details as we get closer.
Biome In Class Experiment
We will be creating biomes in the classroom. If you have glass or plastic mason jars you would like to send in, we would appreciate it!
Before we leave for Christmas break, your student will receive a science fair packet. Our annual science fair will be held in the spring, so we do have a large amount of time, but I want to make sure if you choose an experiment that needs time, that you have ample time.
